Hi Karen!

Video art from the exhibition HOLD FAST, Copeland Gallery, 2023

Dear friend,

In this month’s special Velvet Room, I am screening a piece of autobiographical video art from the exhibition, HOLD FAST, which was shown at the Copeland Gallery, Peckham in 2023.

‘Hi Karen!’ explores how to find emotional space when caring for someone who lives with dementia. I filmed it on a freezing cold morning at 6am last March. It uses recordings from the many phone calls I recieved from mum. At that time, she could sometimes ring me (and others in my family) over twenty times a day.
