Dear Friend,
How are you? This short tall letter is the special bonus writing for my precious paid subscribers. Thank you for supporting me, and welcome back to The Velvet Room. I hope you enjoy this new material from the Greek island of Lesvos.
I am in the birthplace of Sappho, at a women’s festival in Skala Eressos, and nearing the end of my stay I begin having the usual thoughts about ‘what if I moved here?’ and ‘who would I become if I did?’ I often get these musings when I am somewhere warm and in a place where I notice aspects of me expanding.
The last time I felt this was when I performed at Hay on Wye’s gay pride in June. Like here in Skala Eressos, the people in Hay were caring and dynamic; they had built a community where everything seemed possible. But this letter isn’t about the desire to move, or foreign Sapphic travel, it is more about the imagination (or my lack of sometimes), about what we expect before we go somewhere, and the contrast of what we find when we arrive.
